RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ranks as the third most common cause of cancer related death globally, representing a substantial challenge to global healthcare systems. In China, the primary risk factor for HCC is the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Aberrant serum glycoconjugate levels have long been linked to the progression of HBV-associated HCC (HBV-HCC). Nevertheless, few study systematically explored the dysregulation of glycoconjugates in the progression of HBV-associated HCC and their potency as the diagnostic and prognostic biomarker. METHODS: An integrated strategy that combined transcriptomics, glycomics, and glycoproteomics was employed to comprehensively investigate the dynamic alterations in glyco-genes, N-glycans, and glycoproteins in the progression of HBV- HCC. RESULTS: Bioinformatic analysis of Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets uncovered dysregulation of fucosyltransferases (FUTs) in liver tissues from HCC patients compared to adjacent tissues. Glycomic analysis indicated an elevated level of fucosylated N-glycans, especially a progressive increase in fucosylation levels on IgA1 and IgG2 determined by glycoproteomic analysis. CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate that the abnormal fucosylation plays a pivotal role in the progression of HBV-HCC. Systematic and integrative multi-omic analysis is anticipated to facilitate the discovery of aberrant glycoconjugates in tumor progression.

RESUMO

Mannan is a predominant constituent of cork hemicellulose and is widely distributed in various plant tissues. ß-Mannanase is the principal mannan-degrading enzyme, which breaks down the ß-1,4-linked mannosidic bonds in mannans in an endo-acting manner. Microorganisms are a valuable source of ß-mannanase, which exhibits catalytic activity in a wide range of pH and temperature, making it highly versatile and applicable in pharmaceuticals, feed, paper pulping, biorefinery, and other industries. Here, the origin, classification, enzymatic properties, molecular modification, immobilization, and practical applications of microbial ß-mannanases are reviewed, the future research directions for microbial ß-mannanases are also outlined.

RESUMO

Manganese oxides (MnO2) are commonly prevalent in groundwater, sediment and soil. In this study, we found that oxalate (H2C2O4) dissolved MnO2, leading to the formation of Mn(II)/(III), CO2(aq) and reactive oxygen species (·CO2-/O2·-/H2O2/·OH). Notably, CO2(aq) played a crucial role in ·OH formation, contributing to the degradation of atrazine (ATZ). To elucidate underneath mechanisms, a series of reactions with different gas-liquid ratios (GLR) were conducted. At the GLR of 0.3, 3.76, and + ∞ 79.4 %, 5.32 %, and 5.28 % of ATZ were eliminated, in which the cumulative ·OH concentration was 39.6 µM, 8.11 µM, and 7.39 µM and the cumulative CO2(aq) concentration was 11.2 mM, 4.7 mM, and 2.8 mM, respectively. The proposed reaction pathway was that CO2(aq) participated in the formation of a ternary complex [C2O4-Mn(II)-HCO4·3 H2O]-, which converted to a transition state (TS) as [C2O4-Mn(II)-CO3-OH·3 H2O]-, then decomposed to a complex radical [C2O4-Mn(II)-CO3·3 H2O]·- and ·OH after electron transfer within TS. It was novel to discover the role of CO2(aq) for ·OH yielding during MnO2 dissolution by H2C2O4. This finding helps revealing the overlooked processes that CO2(aq) influenced the fate of ATZ or other organic compounds in environment and providing us ideas for new technique development in contaminant remediation. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Manganese oxides and oxalate are common in soil, sediment and water. Their interactions could induce the formation of Mn(II)/(III), CO2(aq) and ·CO2-/O2·-/H2O2. This study found that atrazine could be effectively removed due to ·OH radicals under condition of high CO2(aq) concentration. The concentrations of Mn (0.0002-8.34 mg·L-1) and CO2(aq) (15-40 mg·L-1) were high in groundwater, and the surface water or rainfall seeps into groundwater and bring organic acids, which might promote the ·OH formation. The results might explain the missing steps of herbicides transformation in these environments and be helpful in developing new techniques in remediation in future.

RESUMO

Aqueous trivalent manganese [Mn(III)], an important reactive intermediate, is ubiquitous in natural surface water containing humic acid (HA). However, the effect of low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) on the formation, stability and reactivity of Mn(III) intermediate is still unknown. In this study, six LMWOAs, including oxalic acid (Oxa), salicylic acid (Sal), catechol (Cat), caffeic acid (Caf), gallic acid (Gal) and ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), were selected to investigate the effects of LMWOAs on the degradation of BPA induced by in situ formed Mn(III)-L in the HA/Mn(II) system under light irradiation. The chromophoric constituents of HA could absorb light radiation and generate superoxide radical to promote the oxidation of Mn(II) to form Mn(III), which was further involved in transformation of BPA. Our results implied that different LMWOAs did significantly impact on Mn(III) production and its degradation of BPA due to their different functional group. EDTA, Oxa and Sal extensively increased the Mn(III) concentration from 50 to 100 µM compared to the system without LMWOAs, following the order of EDTA > Oxa > Sal, and also enhanced the degradation of BPA with the similar patterns. In contrast, Cat, Caf and Gal had an inhibitory effect on the formation of Mn(III), which is likely because they consumed the superoxide radicals generated from irradiated HA, resulting in the inhibition of Mn(II) oxidation and further BPA removal. The product identification and theoretical calculation indicated that a single electron transfer process occurred between Mn(III)-L and BPA, forming BPA radicals and subsequent self-coupling products. Our results demonstrated that the LMWOAs with different structures could alter the cycling process of Mn via complexation and redox reactions, which would provide new implications for the removal of organic pollutants in surface water.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Multi-Shot (MS) Echo-Planar Imaging (EPI) may improve the in-plane resolution of multi-b-value DWI, yet it also considerably increases the scan time. Here we explored the combination of EPI with Keyhole (EPIK) and a calibrationless reconstruction algorithm for acceleration of multi-b-value MS-DWI. METHODS: We firstly analyzed the impact of nonuniform phase accrual in EPIK on the reconstructed image. Based on insights gained from the analysis, we developed a calibrationless reconstruction algorithm based on a Space-Contrast-Coil Locally Low-Rank Tensor (SCC-LLRT) constraint for reconstruction of EPIK-acquired data. We compared the algorithm with a modified SPatial-Angular Locally Low-Rank (SPA-LLR) algorithm through simulations, phantoms, and in vivo study. We then compared EPIK with uniformly undersampled EPI for accelerating multi-b-value DWI in 6 healthy subjects. RESULTS: Through theoretical derivations, we found that the reconstruction of EPIK with a SENSE-encoding-based algorithm, such as SPA-LLR, may cause additional aliasing artifacts due to the frequency-dependent distortion of the coil sensitivity. Results from simulations, phantoms, and in vivo study verified the theoretical finding by showing that the calibrationless SCC-LLRT algorithm reduced aliasing artifacts compared with SPA-LLR. Finally, EPIK with SCC-LLRT substantially reduced the ghosting artifacts compared with uniform undersampled multi-b-value DWI, decreasing the fitting errors in ADC (0.05 ± 0.01 vs 0.10 ± 0.01, P < 0.001) and IVIM mapping (0.026 ± 0.004 vs 0.06 ± 0.006, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The SCC-LLRT algorithm reduced the aliasing artifacts of EPIK by using a calibrationless modeling of the multi-coil data. The dense sampling of k-space center offers EPIK a potential to improve image quality for acceleration of multi-b-value MS-DWI.

RESUMO

Arabidopsis plants adapt to warm temperatures by promoting hypocotyl growth primarily through the basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor PIF4 and its downstream genes involved in auxin responses, which enhance cell division. In the current study, we discovered that cell wall-related calcium-binding protein 2 (CCaP2) and its paralogs CCaP1 and CCaP3 function as positive regulators of thermo-responsive hypocotyl growth by promoting cell elongation in Arabidopsis. Interestingly, mutations in CCaP1/CCaP2/CCaP3 do not affect the expression of PIF4-regulated classic downstream genes. However, they do noticeably reduce the expression of xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolase genes, which are involved in cell wall modification. We also found that CCaP1/CCaP2/CCaP3 are predominantly localized to the plasma membrane, where they interact with the plasma membrane H+-ATPases AHA1/AHA2. Furthermore, we observed that vanadate-sensitive H+-ATPase activity and cell wall pectin and hemicellulose contents are significantly increased in wild-type plants grown at warm temperatures compared with those grown at normal growth temperatures, but these changes are not evident in the ccap1-1 ccap2-1 ccap3-1 triple mutant. Overall, our findings demonstrate that CCaP1/CCaP2/CCaP3 play an important role in controlling thermo-responsive hypocotyl growth and provide new insights into the alternative pathway regulating hypocotyl growth at warm temperatures through cell wall modification mediated by CCaP1/CCaP2/CCaP3.

RESUMO

Multivalent glycosidase inhibitors based on 1-deoxynojirimycin derivatives against α-glucosidases have been rapidly developed. Nonetheless, the mechanism based on self-assembled multivalent glucosidase inhibitors in living systems needs to be further studied. It remains to be determined whether the self-assembly possesses sufficient stability to endure transit through the small intestine and subsequently bind to the glycosidases located therein. In this paper, two amphiphilic compounds, 1-deoxynojirimycin and α-peptoid conjugates (LP-4DNJ-3C and LP-4DNJ-6C), were designed. Their self-assembling behaviors, multivalent α-glucosidase inhibition effect, and fluorescence imaging on living organs were studied. LP-4DNJ-6C exhibited better multivalent α-glucosidase inhibition activities in vitro. Moreover, the self-assembly of LP-4DNJ-6C could effectively form a complex with Nile red. The complex showed fluorescence quenching effect upon binding with α-glucosidases and exhibited potent fluorescence imaging in the small intestine. This result suggests that a multivalent hypoglycemic effect achieved through self-assembly in the intestine is a viable approach, enabling the rational design of multivalent hypoglycemic drugs.

RESUMO

As a pivotal enzyme that regulates dephosphorylation in cell activities and participates in the insulin signaling pathway, protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) is considered to be an important target for the therapy of diabetes. In this work, a rapid and efficient inhibitor screening method of PTP1B was established based on capillary electrophoresis (CE), and used for screening and evaluating the inhibition effect of Traditional Chinese Medicine on PTP1B. Response Surface Methodology was used for optimizing the conditions of analysis. After method validation, the enzyme kinetic study and inhibition test were performed. As a result, the IC50 of PTP1B inhibitors Ⅳ and ⅩⅧ were consistent with reported values measured by a conventional method. It was found that the extracts of Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch) Bunge and Morus alba L. showed prominent inhibition on the activity of PTP1B, which were stronger than the positive controls. Meanwhile, on top of the excellent advantages of CE, the whole analysis time is less than 2 min. Thus, the results demonstrated that a fast and efficient screening method was successfully developed. This method could be a powerful tool for screening inhibitors from complex systems. It can also provide an effective basis for lead compound development in drug discovery.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) on radiotherapy-related neuropathic pain in patients with head and neck malignancies, and to explore comprehensive nursing strategies. METHODS: In this retrospective study, a total of 80 patients diagnosed with head and neck malignancy and receiving radiotherapy were divided into 2 groups according to treatment. Patients in the control group received conventional radiation therapy and postoperative care, and those in the trial group received rhEGF in addition to conventional radiation therapy and care. Visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to evaluate the pain degree of patients before and after treatment, EORTC QLQ-C30 scale was used to evaluate the quality of life of patients before and after treatment, and the skin and mucosal reactions of patients after radiotherapy were observed. RESULTS: Baseline characteristics were similar between the two groups. VAS scores in the trial group were significantly lower than those in the control group during and after radiotherapy (p < 0.001), and skin and mucosal reactions were less severe (p < 0.05). In addition, compared with the control group, the quality of life and symptom scores of the trial group were significantly improved after treatment (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: rhEGF can effectively alleviate neuropathic pain during and after radiotherapy in patients with head and neck malignancies, improve skin and mucosal response, and improve quality of life.

RESUMO

Purpose: This study aimed to explore the effects of elevated KDM4D expression and potential therapeutic effects of Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) on pterygium. Methods: The expression levels of KDM4D in the primary pterygium (n = 29) and normal conjunctiva (n = 14) were detected by immunohistochemistry. The effects of KDM4D on pterygium fibroblasts were detected by the CCK-8 assay, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry assay, flow cytometry, and scratch wound healing assay. The relative expression of KDM4D in pterygium fibroblasts stimulated by interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, IL-8, and LBP was detected by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot. The effects of LBP on pterygium fibroblasts were detected using flow cytometry and scratch wound healing assays. Results: The expression level of KDM4D in pterygium was higher than that in normal conjunctiva. KDM4D increased the cell viability of pterygium fibroblasts. The differentially expressed genes identified in the LM-MS assay enriched in "actin filament organization" and "apoptosis." KDM4D promoted migration and inhibited apoptosis of pterygium fibroblasts in vitro. Inflammatory cytokines, including IL-1ß, IL-6, and IL-8, enhanced the expression of KDM4D in pterygium fibroblasts. LBP inhibited the expression of KDM4D in pterygium fibroblasts and decreased their cell viability. Moreover, LBP attenuated the KDM4D effects on migration and apoptosis of pterygium fibroblasts. Conclusions: Elevated KDM4D expression is a risk factor for pterygium formation. LBP inhibits the expression of KDM4D in pterygium fibroblasts and may be a potential drug for delaying pterygium development.

RESUMO

Objective: To validate whether a residual mass demonstrated on early postoperative MR after percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) is indeed an intraoperatively retained annulus fibrosus, and explore the correlation between imaging changes in the residual mass and clinical prognosis of patients. Methods: A prospective study of 118 patients were included. During surgery, a contrast medium, Gadopentetate Dimeglumine, was injected around the ruptured annulus fibrosus. The intensity of the T2 signal, the size of the remaining mass (SR), and the cross-sectional area of the spinal canal (SCSA), VAS, and ODI were assessed at preoperative, 1-h (7-day), 6-month, and 12-month postoperative intervals. Based on VAS at 7 days post-surgery, patients were classified into either a non-remission group (Group A, VAS > 3) or a remission group (Group B, VAS ≤ 3). Results: Six patients who developed recurrent LDH were excluded. A residual mass was detected on MRI 1 h after surgery in 94.6% (106/112). During one year of follow-up, 90.1% (101/112) of the patients displayed fibrous annulus remodeling, although 68.7% (77/112) still exhibited herniation. Significant differences were found in the ODI between Groups A and B one week after surgery (p < 0.001). However, no significant differences were observed in T2 signal intensity, SR, and SCSA at 1-h, 6-month and 12-month post-surgery (p > 0.05) between the two groups. In a multiple linear regression analysis, early postoperative ODI changes were associated with T2 signal (B = -10.22, sig < 0.05), long-term changes were associated with alterations in SR (B = 5.63, sig < 0.05) and SCSA (B = -0.13, sig < 0.05). Conclusion: The residual mass observed in early postoperative MR images after PELD was the retained annulus fibrosus intraoperatively. Short-term changes in clinical symptoms after PELD were linked to T2 signal intensity, while long-term changes were associated with changes in SR and SCSA.

RESUMO

Central nervous system (CNS) diseases are one of the diseases that threaten human health. The delivery of drugs targeting the CNS has always been a significant challenge; the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is the main obstacle that must be overcome. The rise of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) therapy has brought hope for the treatment of CNS diseases. However, the problems of low homing rate, susceptibility differentiation into astrocytes, immune rejection, and formation of iatrogenic tumors of transplanted BMSCs limit their clinical application. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (BMSC-Exos) have become a hot research topic in the treatment of CNS diseases in recent years because of their excellent histocompatibility, low immunogenicity, ease of crossing the BBB, and their ability to serve as natural carriers for treatment. This article reviews the mechanisms of BMSC-Exos in CNS diseases and provides direction for further research.

RESUMO

At present, the production of the majority of valuable chemicals is dependent on the microbial fermentation of carbohydrate substrates. However, direct competition is a potential problem for microbial feedstocks that are also used within the food/feed industries. The use of alternative carbon sources, such as acetate, has therefore become a research focus. As a common organic acid, acetate can be generated from lignocellulosic biomass and C1 gases, as well as being a major byproduct in microbial fermentation, especially in the presence of an excess carbon source. As a model microorganism, Escherichia coli has been widely applied in the production of valuable chemicals using different carbon sources. Recently, several valuable chemicals (e.g., succinic acid, itaconic acid, isobutanol, and mevalonic acid) have been investigated for synthesis in E. coli using acetate as the sole carbon source. In this review, we summarize the acetate metabolic pathway in E. coli and recent research into the microbial production of chemical compounds in E. coli using acetate as the carbon source. Although microbial synthetic pathways for different compounds have been developed in E. coli, the production titer and yield are insufficient for commercial applications. Finally, we discuss the development prospects and challenges of using acetate for microbial fermentation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of orthokeratology lenses (OK lenses) on corneal biomechanics in subjects of different ages. METHODS: Fifty subjects with mild to moderate myopia were categorized into three groups (Group I-III) based on their age. Corvis ST was used to collect dynamic corneal response parameters (DCRs) at different follow-up time points. Repeated measures analysis of variance combined with simple effect analysis was used to analyze the changes in DCRs in different groups during the follow-up period. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to analyze the correlations between axial length growth (ALG) at 6 months (ALG-6M) or 12 months (ALG-12M) and sex, baseline spherical equivalent refraction (SER), and DCRs. RESULTS: The DCRs changed in all three groups after wearing OK lenses. Most DCRs showed significant differences between baseline and 6 months after wearing OK lenses, while the differences between DCRs at 6 months and 12 months were not statistically significant. No significant differences in DCRs were observed among the three groups at the same follow-up time point. Additionally, at 6 months post-OK lens wear, ALG-6M was significantly correlated with velocity of the corneal apex at the first applanation (A1V-6M) (P = 0.002), Corvis biomechanical index (CBI-6M) (P = 0.004), the maximum amount of corneal movement (DAM-6M) (P = 0.010), deformation amplitude ratio of 2 mm (DAR2-6M) (P = 0.010), and stress-strain index (SSI-6M) (P = 0.038) in Group I. Furthermore, ALG-12M showed significant correlations with SSI-6M (P = 0.031), peak distance at the DAM (PD)-6M (P = 0.037), baseline Ambrósio Relational Thickness to the horizontal profile (P = 0.013) in Group I. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of DCRs displayed significant changes within the initial 6 months of OK lens wear. Minimal variation in DCRs was observed across different age groups at the same follow-up time point. Certain DCR parameters exhibited correlations with ALG, suggesting their potential in predicting ALG in myopic children undergoing OK lenses correction.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To explore the value of arterial spin labeled (ASL) and blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) imaging in evaluating allogeneic kidney function after renal transplantation. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-five renal transplant patients were included. Demographic and imaging data were collected. Transplanted renal function, pathology, ASL and BOLD parameters were obtained. The patients were divided into normal, mild and severe injury group. The correlation between BOLD/ASL parameters and clinical data were evaluated. The prediction models were based on ASL and BOLD parameters using multivariate logistic analysis. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to analyze the effects of gender, age, ASL and BOLD on the survival of renal transplant patients. RESULTS: ASL and BOLD parameters were independently associated with renal function injury and renal allograft positive pathology. The AUC of prediction model for renal allograft function based on ASL and BOLD parameters was 0.85, while the AUC based on BOLD parameters was 0.70. Renal transplantation time showed a positive correlation with age, BOLD parameters and SCr,while a negative correlation with ASL parameters and eGFR. ASL parameter was positively correlated with eGFR and negatively correlated with Scr. BOLD parameter was negatively correlated with eGFR, ASL and positively correlated with Scr. Cox proportional hazards regression model showed that the increase of age could reduce the risk of renal function injury and positive pathology. CONCLUSIONS: ASL and BOLD were associated with renal function injury and renal allograft positive pathology. ASL and BOLD had some value in predicting renal allograft function.

RESUMO

Based on the job demands-resources model, this study explored the relationships among emotional labor strategies, job demands of teaching, job resources, and teaching efficacy for university teachers. The results, based on a sample of 316 university teachers from China, showed that the teachers preferred to convey authenticity by expressing deep acting and naturally felt emotion. Furthermore, deep acting and naturally felt emotions were found to have a significant positive effect on teaching efficacy, whereas surface acting did not have any significant relationship with teaching efficacy. As organizational variables, job demands significantly positively affected surface acting, deep acting, and naturally felt emotion. In contrast, job resources positively affected surface and deep acting, but no significant relationship with naturally felt emotions was found. These results highlight that university teachers from China could benefit from adopting authentic emotional labor strategies, specifically deep acting and naturally felt emotions, as the most effective strategies in teaching. Based on the above findings, this paper concludes with recommendations for university administrators to alleviate the emotional labor of college faculty. For example, universities should pay more attention to teachers' emotional state, provide resources to support them, and give more space and support to college teachers in teaching.

RESUMO

DNA cytosine methylation plays a vital role in repressing retrotransposons, and such derepression is linked with developmental failure, tumorigenesis and aging. DNA methylation patterns are formed by precisely regulated actions of DNA methylation writers (DNA methyltransferases) and erasers (TET, ten-eleven translocation dioxygenases). However, the mechanisms underlying target-specific oxidation of 5mC by TET dioxygenases remain largely unexplored. Here we show that a large low-complexity domain (LCD), located in the catalytic part of Tet enzymes, negatively regulates the dioxygenase activity. Recombinant Tet3 lacking LCD is shown to be hyperactive in converting 5mC into oxidized species in vitro. Endogenous expression of the hyperactive Tet3 mutant in mouse oocytes results in genome-wide 5mC oxidation. Notably, the occurrence of aberrant 5mC oxidation correlates with a consequent loss of the repressive histone mark H3K9me3 at ERVK retrotransposons. The erosion of both 5mC and H3K9me3 causes ERVK derepression along with upregulation of their neighboring genes, potentially leading to the impairment of oocyte development. These findings suggest that Tet dioxygenases use an intrinsic auto-regulatory mechanism to tightly regulate their enzymatic activity, thus achieving spatiotemporal specificity of methylome reprogramming, and highlight the importance of methylome integrity for development.

RESUMO

The development of high performance electrocatalysts for effective hydrogen production is urgently needed. Herein, three hybrid catalysts formed by WS2 and Co-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derivatives are constructed, in which the small amount of W in the MOFs derivatives acts as a bridge to provide the charge transfer channel and enhance the stability. In addition, the effects of the surface charge distribution on the catalytic performance are fully investigated. Due to the optimal interfacial electron coupling and rearrangement as well as its unique porous morphology, WS2 @W-CoPx exhibits superior bifunctional performance in alkaline media with low overpotentials in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) (62 mV at 10 mA cm-2 ) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) (278 mV at 100 mA cm-2 ). For overall water splitting (OWS), WS2 @W-CoPx only requires a cell voltage of 1.78 V at 50 mA cm-2 and maintains good stability within 72 h. Density functional theory calculations verify that the combination of W-CoPx with WS2 can effectively enhance the activity of OER and HER with weakened OH (or O) adsorption and enhanced H atom adsorption. This work provides a feasible idea for the design and practical application of WS2 or phosphide-based catalysts in OWS.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The relationship between varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection and the risk of dementia has not been previously studied specifically. Therefore, this study sought to determine the relationship between studying VZV infection and dementia occurring in the general population by conducting an extensive meta-analysis of published cases. METHOD: A systematic literature search was conducted in seven online databases by October 31, 2022. Heterogeneity was tested by the I2 index. Pooled HR and 95% CI were used to estimate the effect of VZV infection on dementia. Sensitivity analyses and publication bias were also performed. RESULT: Nine studies involving 3,326,673 subjects were included. VZV infection was associated with an increased risk of dementia (HR = 1.11, 95% CI: 1.02-1.21). The risk of dementia was reduced in those who received antiviral therapy compared to those who did not (HR = 0.84, 95% CI: 0.71-0.99). In addition, VZV infection was found to be associated with an increased risk of developing dementia in the pooled results of the moderate quality study (HR = 1.81,95% CI: 1.27-2.59), and this association persisted when subgroup analyses were performed based on region (Asia: HR = 1.18,95% CI: 1.04-1.33). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that VZV infection might increase the risk of developing dementia, but there is no clear mechanism about the true relationship, and since there is no effective treatment for dementia, and our results suggest that some populations can benefit from antiviral therapy, it is at least arguable that patients who develop VZV infection should be treated with appropriate antiviral medications.
